The Battle of Midway was a seminal event in WWII. We will address the strategic situation in April-May 1942 and highlight key events that led to Midway. We will discuss the operational plans for both the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) and the US Navy. You will learn key naval terms; doctrine of the time; capabilities and limitations of the ships and aircraft that fought at Midway on both sides.
This course will focus on the primary battle day as it unfolds on 4 June 1942, on key tactical events that led to the catastrophic defeat of the IJN mobile carrier force, on root causes for the IJN defeat/US victory and the battle’s impact on the Pacific war and WWII’s larger global conflict.
